The new year is always full of healthy resolutions: exercise more, eat better, quit smoking. How about a healthy resolution for your septic system? Here are some easy-to-follow guidelines for improving and maintaining the health of your septic system.

  • Watch Your Waste Products – Everything you flush down the toilet or pour down the drain ends up in your septic system. It is important to minimize the amount of chemical compounds that enter the system. Instead of using bleach to clean your toilet, use a natural cleaner such as 1 part baking soda to 1 part vinegar. These products will promote healthy bacteria which is essential to the decomposition of waste in your system. Grease is also a big no-no. Too much grease in the system can clog the drainage pipes and eventually harm your drainfield.

  • Maintain Accessibility – When it’s time for maintenance or repairs on your system, it is important for your septic tank lid to be accessible. Installing a riser is also a great way to improve accessibility to your system. A riser will make your inspections quicker (i.e. less expensive) and minimize the mess associated with clean out.

  • Keep The Drainfield Clear – You should never park or drive over the drainfield. Keep storage sheds, patios, carports and any type of landscaping plastic away from this area as well. This will keep the soil in this area from being packed down which may result in broken pipes. Be mindful of the plant life on your drainfield. Grass and shallow root plants are ideal for drainfield coverage. But trees and plants with dense root systems have the potential to wreak havoc on your system and its pipes.

  • Be Efficient With Water – Too much water usage is a frequent cause of septic system failure. Leaky faucets and toilets are easy fixes that can keep your field from getting water-logged.
