Your septic system is a highly scientific piece of equipment; a process completely influenced by nature and chemistry. While they are built to naturally run their course and self-maintain, they do require maintenance and careful observation. A septic tank must be pumped and cleaned; without it, build-up will occur and system failure will set in.

Your septic tank is a buried, water-tight container usually made of concrete, fiberglass, or polyethylene. Its job is to hold the wastewater, that has exited your house from one main drainage pipe, long enough to allow solids to settle to the bottom (forming sludge) while the oil and grease float to the top as scum. The liquid wastewater then exits the tank into a designated drainfield. The drainfield, a shallow, covered, excavation is made in soil. The drainfield helps the surrounding soil to accept, treat and disperse of wastewater as it seeps through the soil, ultimately returning to the groundwater.

What’s left? The tank.

The tank, filled with the solid sludge needs to be pumped out and cleaned. It is widely accepted that a 3 Bedroom – 4 Occupant house without a garbage disposal will need to be pumped once every three years. If you have a garbage disposal, your solid waste disposal is of greater volume, therefore, you need to have your septic tank pumped on an annual basis.
